WILL ON VETERANS
South Jersey is home to over half a million Veterans that have made personal sacrifices throughout their lives to keep us safe on the homeland. Our VA system must be revamped to be as accessible as possible to these heroes, and that starts with modernization efforts to give Vets the best possible care.
Medical records are living documents. When someone goes from active duty to Veteran status, their records should be treated as such. We're living in an age where a person can use an app on their phone to receive care from doctors all without leaving their home, yet some Veterans still have to wait months after active duty before their local VA receives their Department of Defense medical records.
Additionally, access to care is paramount. Bolstering staff and bandwidth at Community-Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) is essential to getting Vets care as close to their residence as possible. South Jersey is a geographically large area, and we cannot put extra burdens on our Vets to travel excessively far distances to get desperately needed treatment and medical attention.
VA's efforts to modernize their technology systems are essential to providing the highest level of care to Veterans and their families. VA's Electronic Health Record Modernization (EHRM) Program is one of the largest modernization efforts in Government. EHRM has the potential to be a game changer, giving doctors instant access to Veterans' complete health and medical records, including their care while in active duty, and I will do all I can to expedite a full and complete implementation.
As someone with substantive experience working with legislators and government agencies, I will work with the VA to understand the root of their challenges within their unique environment so that we can implement common-sense solutions that are both sustainable and successful for everyone.
Veterans policy cannot be partisan politics - I will work with my colleagues across the aisle as partners to ensure we stay focused on Veterans instead of politics. Together, we can and will make impactful and transformative advancements to get Vets the care they deserve.
